"But," said the Cardinal half aloud, with the gentle dawning of a tender smile brightening the fine firm curve of his lips, -- "it is not the end The end here, no doubt; -- but the beginning -- "there "" He raised his eyes devoutly, and instinctively touched the silver crucifix hanging by its purple ribbon at his breast. The orange-red glow of the sun encompassed him with fiery rings, as though it would fain consume his thin, black-garmented form after the fashion in which flames consumed the martyrs of old, -- the worn figures of mediaeval saints in their half-broken niches stared down upon him stonily, as though they would have said, -- "So we thought, -- even we -- and for our thoughts and for our creed we suffered willingly, -- yet lo, we have come upon an age of the world in which the people know us not, -- or knowing, laugh us all to scorn.
The masterChristian A NOVEL original text edition by Marie Corelli Literature Fiction eBooks
This book challenges social mores, and traditional religious beliefs/religious DOCTRINE while teaching about the true love of Christ (vs. "Christian") through a very detailed scandal of art, murder, love, lust, liars, illegitimate children, positioning for power, and forgiveness without smut. That it was written in the late 1800s and is as relevant today, traversing 3 centuries, should give it standing to be republished and make you curious to read it. For those who stand on doctrine/rules, I urge you to read through to the end before judging this book.
Marie Corelli is a master at character and plot development. It is thick with detail. As the book is more than a century old, it's easy to find a version online (and I've intentionally left out plot/character in this review for that very reason--the first 50 pages will have you hooked) but for those who love real books, this is a gem to add to your collection.

The masterChristian A NOVEL original text edition by Marie Corelli Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

What I like about this book is the intrepid way Corelli expresses her opinions about christianity and morality.
I chose this rating because this book satisfied a deep desire to seek Christ's will daily. To see those in need above and before myself. This book is fiction. it puts aside all doctrine but that of Christ's teachings of compassion.
